November
29, 2007:Castries, St.
Lucia; Jeannine (Compton) Rambally, daughter of former
prime minister John Compton, won the same seat held by her
father for five decades prior to his passing on September 7.
Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the 37-year-old marine
biologist won the by-election held in the Micoud North
district to become the first female elected to St. Lucia's
parliament.
Running for the ruling United Workers Party (UWP), Rambally
defeated four other candidates, securing 1,957 votes,
approximately 900 more than her closest rival.
"Rambally can serve as ordinary member of Parliament, in the
Ministry of Gender Affairs or in that of Youth and Sports",
said Prime Minister Stephenson King.

According to the
St. Lucia Star, Lady Janice Compton described her daughter’s
win as “bittersweet.” “These are happy moments but for me it
seems a little sad that Sir John is not here, although I
feel he is here,” she said. “I am very proud of Jeannine.
She worked hard but there are those who said she was in a
privileged position. Sometimes when you are in a privileged
position you still have to work hard. She [Jeannine] said to
me that she had a baptismal of fire and she earned her way
into this election.”
